A healthy living is not only about physical well-being, it involves good mental and emotional health. This in turn refers to your overall psychological well-being. Being psychologically fit does not simply mean the absence of various mental health problems. It means the presence of positive characteristics along with being free of depression, anxiety or other psychological issues. It means the well being of yourself, people around you, the quality of your relationship with others and your ability to manage your feelings and difficulties.
People who are mentally and emotionally healthy have: · Contentment towards their life while having a mission and purpose in their activities and life in general. · Motivation for living and the ability to be happy, laugh and have fun. · A balance between different aspects of life - work and play, rest and activity, etc. · The ability and motivation to deal with problems, stress and bounce back from difficult situations. · Contentment in their relationships and the ability to fulfill relationships. · The zest to learn new things and the flexibility to adapt to change. · Self-confidence, self-respect and high self-esteem.   These characteristics of mental health ensure full participation in life through positive, productive and meaningful activities. It will also ensure strong relationships that will help cope with life’s challenges and stresses in a healthy manner. These characteristics do not ensure a life without bad times or experiencing emotional problems like disappointments, loss, and change, which cause sadness, anxiety, and stress. Instead, people who are mentally and emotionally healthy have the zest and motivation to bounce back from any kind of adversity, stress and trauma. When to seek Help from Professionals While many people can stay emotional and mental health with the positivity and optimism in life while some people have difficulties dealing even with small trivial problems. If you have made persistent efforts to improve your mental and emotional health without any success, it’s time to seek some professional help. Professional help can motivate us to do things for ourselves and understand our abilities, weaknesses and also help us to get an insight on our thoughts and feelings.  Behavior that may require immediate attention · Inability to sleep or decreased sleep. · Feeling low, sad, hopeless or helpless most of the time. · Feeling of loneliness, boredom. · Low concentration level, low memory retention ability. · Use of nicotine, drugs, food or alcohol to cope with difficult emotions. · Increased/ decreased eating habits. · Thoughts of death or suicide. · Negative thoughts or feelings or fear that one can’t control. · Getting bogged down with small problems. Thus if you feel you are suffering from any of these behavioral problems do not hesitate to connect with a mental health professional and seek help and be healthy.
